Therapeutic Music
Liz Barnes, CTM - CCM
The practice of a certified therapeutic musician is to use the intrinsic healing elements of live music and sound to create an environment conducive to the healing process.
“ You can look at disease as a form of disharmony. And there is no organ system in the body that’s not affected by sound, music and vibration.” - Mitchell Gaynor, M.D.

Experience and Approach to Therapeutic Music.
I have been a professional pianist for over thirty years and have enjoyed using my expertise in a variety of settings. I have extensive performance experience and am accomplished in most genres including jazz, rock, blues, R&B, country and classical although I currently perform primarily as a jazz artist. I have a long history as an educator having been the Director of Jazz Studies at the acclaimed Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk, VA, where I instructed in the areas of advanced theory, harmony, ear training, composition and improvisation for all instrumentalists. I also taught privately throughout my career as well as served as a church musician for multiple institutions.
I was first introduced to therapeutic music when a friend suggested that I expand my teaching business to include a focus on therapeutic musicians as they require advanced improvisation skills. After some research into various certification programs I found myself extremely inspired by the work these musicians were doing and made the decision to broaden my areas of expertise to include therapeutic music in clinical settings. I was familiar with the concept of music as “service” rather than performance given my church experience. My rich background in improvisation made me well suited for this new direction.
In addition to private clients, I have had the great fortune to work as a certified therapeutic musician for Hospice of the Shenandoah in Fishersville, VA. Since hospice patients present with many different diagnoses and at different stages along the trajectory of illness, therapeutic music can be used in many ways: distraction, stabilization of vital signs, facilitating rest and relaxation, and diminishing the perception of pain. Therapeutic music enhances communication, assists with life review and facilitates emotional release. Additionally, therapeutic music enhances presence and attention among family members for all patients. I have also spent several years working with dementia patients. It has been incredibly meaningful and rewarding to share the journeys of so many remarkable people.
